‘Communication’- when we hear this
word, our mind constructs a definition in
a fraction of second that, it has assembled
the whole world in a social and mutual
understanding for conveying and exchanging
ideas through speech and writing.
Our modern world relies on our ability
to communicate with each other. Much of
this communication is based on the use of
symbols. Symbols are images or patterns that
are used to convey a certain idea. Religious
and traditional symbols, mathematical
symbols, flags, coins, trademarks and
pictorial advertisings are all examples of
symbols; they all stand for something.
Communication symbols are used in almost
every aspect of our lives. Symbols were used
since the most ancient times. The early cave
dwellers did not have a written language or
an alphabet. However, they did use symbols.
Their first use of symbols was to mark their
hunting grounds. Eventually they wanted to
keep track of the animals that they hunted, so
they began painting them on the cave walls.
Such symbols are known as pictographs or
object pictures.
