THE INNER EYE:
ThTh e Artist as an Urban Shaman
Dhiraj Singh is a self-taught artist who apart from
full time journalism, works on canvas and mixed media.
Unlike his abstract paintings of acrylic on canvas that
take a stratospheric view of life on earth as interpreting
‘mood- maps’, his installations tend to delve deeper with
the use of X-rays to explore an inner life of our urban
existence.
Th e current solo show of the artist organized by
Gallery Artchill in Amber Fort in Jaipur, showcases his installations made of X-rays and lights, which have nowbecome his forte. And there is a strong reason why he
has chosen X-rays as the main medium for his
mixed media works. In the artist’s own words,
“I was a sickly child who made a lot of trips to
the hospital. Th e image of X-rays stayed with
me. Th ey were like pictures of our insides that
showed us how similar we all were. Unlike
most people I don’t fi nd them macabre, but
a very sane way of seeing people and things.
Th ere’s a lot of beauty there. I can do so much
with the texture, and the play of light and
darkness.”
