Time and human relationships are crucial elements in the process of life. Either of the two doesn’t exist in isolation, the constant thought of framing time and to be in still has given birth to many desires. In many remains creating art and achieving timelessness.

Given that time itself is an invisible and intangible entity, it is fascinating that time and its measurement has held humans in its thrall since perhaps the beginning of human consciousness.

Mapping, measuring and telling time has been an adventure and an obsession for humankind. The rhythms of the celestial bodies in the sky were perhaps the first markers of the passage of time for early humans .There was also the rhythm of the female body … the shedding of blood at regular intervals and the rhythm of the seasons — spring, summer, autumn and winter. The appearance of stars in certain clusters or at a fixed point in the horizon may have become clear as patterns to observant human eyes. Perhaps, thus the measures of time began…. dividing time into days, months, seasons and years.  Calendars and almanacs clearly arose from the desire to organize time to suit human needs and activities. At one level, the calendar and the almanac is a practical way of organizing time but at a deeper more metaphysical level, it appears to be  a way, however illusory , of trying to understand and control time.

Art has always tried to make sense of the conundrum that is time. Interestingly, art happens in time and space and both are entrenched in the art-making process and the finished work.

Painted Almanac: Framing Time, Past, Present & Future is an interesting exploration into notions of time and artistic mark-making, particularly the creation of an image, both as a response to a stimulus of time and as a means of embedding a moment of time in art.
