OMG Oh My God is a brilliant movie which deals with
sensitive issues like religion, God and existence of God and
also depicts how religion has become a business these days
in the hands of a few. Th is fi lm’s strong point is a simple
story which succeeds in striking a chord in common
people’s hearts. People will be able to relate with the trials
and tribulations faced by the protagonist of the story- Kanji
Lalji Mehta- a character played with utmost perfection by
the veteran Bollywood actor Paresh Rawal.
Kanji Lalji Mehta is essentially a staunch atheist who
owns an antique shop in Chor Bazar. Th ough he himself
is a non-believer of God and questions the existence of
God every now and then, yet he does not blink his eyelid
while making cock and bull stories about God to sell idols
to the believers of the Almighty. For him religion and faith
are good business propositions only. His life suddenly is
thrown off gear as an earthquake ironically destructs only
his shop in the entire area. While all his detractors blame
it on his atheism that led to God’s wrath, Kanji remainshis loss. However, his happiness is short-lived as the insurance
company denies to provide money for the loss by slating all
destruction under natural calamity as ‘Act Of God’. Th ey
promptly reject the claim stating an earthquake to be an ‘act of
god’ rather than a man-made phenomenon.
Th is is when the most bizarre thing happens. Kanji Bhai
decides to fi le law suit against God for recovery of his loss on
the premise that if God is responsible for his loss then it is
God’s responsibility to compensate him for his losses. His case
causes quite a stir as not only the insurance company but all the
‘salesman’ (as referred by Kanji bhai) of God – priests, pujaris,
moulvis, etc. get dragged to court to defend God. Th e arguments
made by Kanji bhai in court are delightful to watch because of
the power-house performance by Paresh Rawal as the helpless
businessman who has been wronged.
