RINI’S TRYST WITH EXOTIC WORLD- Sumati Gangopadhyay

It was sometime in the 70’s when I met Rini Dhumal. 70’s and 80’s have been described by many as the golden years for the Baroda Fine Arts Faculty. Eminent Artists like K.G. Subramanyan and Shankho Chaudhuri used to teach at the Fine Arts Faculty then. Many teachers were young and enthusiastic. The faculty activities, like seminars, workshops, fairs, exhibitions and talks by eminent artists were held quite regularly. Distinguished and famous artists and scholars visited the faculty to give talks and interact with the students. When I met Rini she had returned from Paris. Rini had an opportunity to work in a print making studio of Sir S.W. Hayter in Paris. She had met Krishna Reddy there who was a close associate of Sir Hayter. While talking about her Paris work experience, she told me how she was more fascinated by Krishna Reddy’s Poetic spirit rather than Hayter’s technical approach. Rini taught at the Baroda Faculty of Fine Arts, Graphic Department for many years. I remember one afternoon when I met her at her faculty studio, I recall, that day when she had explained to me in detail, the colour viscosity technique. Eminent Artist K.G.
