INKED WANDERLUST: ROHIT CHAWLA
– Uma Nair

This year at the Religare he unveiled Wanderlust. In two parts along
its lush walls here were nomads who belonged to a nether class. I use these
words because Rohit the epicurean has this thirst to document what is
rare and edge worthy-resonant filled and rather full of a wry intrigue. If
there were a statement on global nomads with trendy antique jewellery and
tattoos there were also the Kutch tribes in their exotic costumes and their
intricate paraphernalia.
“This series reflect a tribe that will soon disappear if we let them,” said
Rohit. “ These global nomads follow the religion of random and live forever
in the state of bohemia (figuratively) travelling from all around the globe…
they arrive in Goa every winter with their fur and bows, lace and leather….
tattoos and moles intact.”
Rohit was fascinated by their sense of funky raggedness for without
these people, Goa has no funk, and without funk what are we asks he with
a quizzical air.
