Art & Deal Correspondent

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of artist, mother, sister and friend Chitralekha Sen Tagore. She was born in Guwahati, in the state of Assam as the eldest child of Subho and Aarati Tagore. She began her initial training as an artist at the Government College of Art, in Calcutta where she studied under the tutelage of a number of significant acclaimed artists.

After having completed artistic studies in her motherland, she settled in British Columbia, Victoria in Canada where she married and raised her family. In doing this she successfully created a bridge between East and West, continuing to develop her artistic practice in Canada while exhibiting solo shows in Mumbai, Bangalore, Calcutta and other cities. She was mother to two sons, the youngest of which passed away in 2009.

For much of her career she chose to work mainly with the versatile medium of water-colour, and later in life her practice developed away from water-colour and she began producing works of acrylic on canvas. For the last few years of her life she courageously battled with cancer, and on November the 10th 2017 she finally succumbed to the disease after a lengthy and brave fight.

The Sen Tagore family continues to possess a large and impressive collection of renowned artworks which are housed in the artist’s former home in Victoria, Canada.

Chitralekha Sen Tagore will continue to be an inspiration to all who knew her, for her remarkable artworks, great talent, zeal for life and her courageous spirit.
