“For the protection of the good, the destruction of the evil-doer and for the establishment of dharma, I come into being from age to age” (Bhagvada Gita 4.8)
The ancient scriptures that are considered as the knowledge bank of the Indian ethos, explicitly and eloquently talk about the avatars or incarnations of Vishnu, the supreme Lord, restorer of the metaphysical forces of nature. It is his compassionate temperament, and for the protection of virtues (dharma that upholds the world), he takes a unique form in every age (yuga).
