Reality Check
how do we understand dignity of labor in India for artists

Clyde D’Mello

There are times we always think that we could have done something better when we were young (for example an education), but age and dignity of labor is our enemy.

Raymond Briggs, a comic book author, is one of the most awkwardly placed great authors and artists. He does not stand a chance with the greats like Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, etc.; in fact, he is a breed apart. I came across two of his acclaimed graphic novel (or that’s what a comic book with a beginning, a middle, and an end is called these days) When The Wind Blows (1982), and Gentleman Jim (1980), both dealing with an old aged couple (probably his own parents, just as he did with Ernst and Ethel –a biographical account of his parents Knopf[September 21, 1999]), and how they lived their old lives in the countryside of England. Our age defines us by what we dream or what we would have done in our youth when our body was with life, which is what Gentleman Jim is all about.
