“The major thing of this symposium is that all the work will
be placed permanently for a lifetime in public places, where the
public can always enjoy them, interact with them, and touch
them. Udaipur’s city administration, the city’s Magistrate and
District Collector, has been most cooperative in encouraging
and facilitating this project. Each sculpture will find a place
suitable for both it and its environment.” says Kavadia.
This project, as laudable as it is, inevitably forces us to
confront the very definition of “monumental”.
Online definitions of the word include:
1. resembling a monument; massive or imposing.
2. exceptionally great, as in quantity, quality, extent, or
degree: a monumental work.
3. of historical or enduring significance: a monumental
victory.
4. Fine Arts. having the quality of being larger than life; of
heroic scale
