AN ARTS DISTRICT: WHO FOR?

Hypothetically, there are two large and untouched audiences for an art district in Bangalore – one in the IT industry, and the other in schools. Perhaps 2014 is the time to involve these two groups to extend the paradigms of our own art world and shake off the lethargy and insecurity that has settled upon it, observes Lina Vincent Sunish.

‘Bengaluru’, the IT city, is one of the fastest growing urban spaces in India – it is all but bursting at its seams, with suburb
after suburb extending in every direction and the infrastructure bending over to accommodate the explosion. However, until recently it was considered a compact city, as compared to Delhi and Mumbai, with a distinct central area housing the business district. By coincidence rather than design, the spaces for arts and culture also came up in this roughly oblong area located between the Mahatma Gandhi road and the KH (Double) Road. From the erstwhile Kritika gallery, and Sista gallery begun by Sara Abraham (of Kala Yatra fame), to the government run gallery Venkatappa, Gallery Time and Space, Sakshi (when it was in Bangalore), Tasveer, Gallery SKE, Sumukha and a list of newer art hubs, most lie in this inner part of Bangalore with very few
