IGNOU ROAD
4 Korean Artists’ Unknown Journey
Insang Song
I G N O U R O A D is a 2km road leading to the Niv Art Center in New Delhi. The road usually suffers from a high level of traffic congestion. Auto Rickshaws, one of the primary public transport available, even are reluctant to go via this route and offer higher than usual fare. It is a one-lane road, with heavy traffic, and uneven surface. As a result, rain leads to water logging and more chaos. Still, no one complains and around ten people ride on a Rickshaw, which has a capacity of 4 people only. I have admiration for people who spend their daily lives on this crowded and noiseridden street without complaining.
Four Korean artists visited India for the first time. It was a strange country to them. At their first encounter in Delhi, how nervous and curious did they feel as they travelled this long, on a busy road with rickshaw blaring horns around them on their way to the Niv Art Centre from the airport?
This exhibition they have created is based on their 3 week residency experience in India. The IGNOU ROAD is a metaphor for the strange, complex, frenzied and crowded scenery of India, Delhi, which is embedded within it. For those who come to India for the first time, such unfamiliar landscapes can be a source of inspiration for them and their work.
The exhibition was held at the Niv Art Center from February 1 to 10, 2018, and their work reveals their first experience in INDIA with their old work together.
