Nothing Else But Love:
Sculptures and Paintings by-P. Gnana
Vidhya Gnana Gouresan
Things base and vile, holding no quantity, love can transpose, to form and dignity. – William Shakespeare
(A Midsummer Night’s Dream)
This evocative quote from the Bard sets the tone for the momentous travelling solo exhibition, Nothing Else But Love: Sculptures and Paintings by P. Gnana, that features a fresh collection of paintings and sculptures, under a visual language of whimsically-stylised imagery of human figures within the universal concept of nothing else but love. And this love that P. Gnana so eloquently portrays, connects to as many perspectives as one can imagine. Some figures are intentionally androgynous, whereby gender is no hindrance to the viewer’s response to the alluring feel of unconditional love. And some figures are absolutely defined, perhaps in the case of the timeless concept of the mother and child. Nevertheless, the concept remains poignant and invincible.
Born in 1970, Gnana is a distinguished painter and sculptor in Singapore. His works are part of several collections, namely that of the former President of the Republic of Singapore and of the ingapore Art Museum of the National Heritage Board, Singapore among many others. He was a recipient of the LASALLE Scholarship of the LASALLE College of the Arts (Singapore), where he received explains, “Combining found materials is an advantage as it compliments my creative process. Usually, I have ideas first before looking for suitable materials. For example, you have an idea that you will use a certain material for the body of your sculpture but after sourcing for the materials, sometimes the idea changes and you use it on other parts instead. The ideas are never fixed.”
