Journey to the Roots
24th June 2013 saw the opening of the retrospective of Bengali artist Jamini Roy titled, ‘Journey to the Roots’ at the National Gallery of Modern art (NGMA) New Delhi. The show was curated by Ella Datta and was a commemoration of the artist’s 125th birth anniversary. There were more than 200 works on display spanning six decades of Roy’s trademark Indian style of
painting. The show was divided into 13 themes, his depictions of Santhal women, Christ images, depictions of epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata, to name some. Some works had been taken on loan from Abhishek Poddar and A Ramachandran.
The show was on view till the
24th of August 2013.
The Barbed Floss Show
The Guild art gallery, Mumbai,
presented a group show by artists’ works from Dhaka, Bangladesh. The show titled ‘Barbed Floss’ was curated by Veeranganakumari Solanki. The participating artists, Tayeba Begum Lipi, Mahbubur Rahman, Promotesh Das Pulak, Molla Sagar and Anisuzzaman Sohel presented their new works and explorations in the form of video works, paintings, photography and installation art.
Technology V/s Man
Gallery Veda, Chennai, presented a solo show of art work by talented artist Chippa Sudhakar, in a show titled, ‘Technology V/s Man’. The works on display showed an array of materials and mediums the artist likes to work in displaying techniques like acrylic and etching, wood and glass resin, carved relief and colour washes. The focus of his works was primarily on his surroundings and his contemporary and narrative figurative works brought forth the blend of a rural upbringing and an urban living and how the artist related to both and his environment. The show commenced on the 21st of July and was on view till the 22nd of August 2013.
