Baroda’s Faculty of Fine Arts, M. S. University
Sandhya Bordewekar
This is perhaps the only art institution in the country offering programs leading to
Diploma and PG Diploma, Bachelor’s (BVA) and Master’s Degree (MVA), and finally,
Ph.Ds in full-fledged departments such as Painting and Mural, Sculpture and Ceramics,
Graphics, Applied Arts, Museology, and Art History and Aesthetics, with the supportive
infrastructure of a large Faculty Library, smaller departmental libraries, the vast Art
History Archives consisting of over 100,000 photographs and 50,000 slides, an Auditorium
and an Exhibition Gallery. Over the years, UGC grants have brought in more than Rs. 1.5
crores to the Art History department under the DSA and ASIHSS schemes, acknowledging
the exceptional work in research and documentation done here. This department also
commonly organizes national seminars and conferences on seminal subjects and produces
documented publications on the presentations. The Faculty regularly receives a number of
visitors from the global art community – artists, art historians, authors, curators – that keep
the intellectual atmosphere robust and alive.
In this academic year, the Faculty will host the self-financed Maharaja Ranjitsinh Gaekwad
Institute of Design (MRID) that will offer a 4-year B.Des. course in Communication Design,
Moving Images, Ceramic and Glass, Accessory Design, Craft and Design, a 2-year M.Des.
course in all of these plus Theory of Design, and a one-year Bridge course in Theory of
Design
