We all know of the legendary fi lm maker Satyajit Ray for his iconic and visionary eye for
fi lmography, but few know of his fi nesse with the pencil and the brush. An ode to the lesser known
and oft en overlooked shades of Ray as an artist, this issue’s cover story, by Partha Mukherjee,
features an insight into Ray’s sleight of hand with his artwork, and his journey as a commercial
artist before he crowned himself with the splendor of cinema.
Parinitha Konanur draws inferences to the essentiality of drawing as part of modern day

Santanu Ganguly reports on Art Alive Gallery’s landmark solo show on legendary artist Sakti
Burman, and the biographical book, ‘SAKTI BURMAN: A Private Universe’. While, Anshita
Arora draws interesting parallels between the essence of cinema as a form of art.
Apurva Sinha sets down a detailed account of the history and artistic value of the Dhamnar
rock-cut caves in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh. Th e essay, ‘A Tryst With A Laterite Marvel:
Dhamnar Rock-Cut Caves’ sheds light on the architectural beauty of the centuries old structures
with curious insights on the infl uences and the history of the caves; an essential for any traveller’s
guide.
‘An Encounter With Gogi Saroj Pal: A Feministic Quest’ features the artists rendition of the
female anatomy and the sensitivity of womanhood and a woman’s sexuality. Th e charismatic
artist Gogi Saroj Pal is an eminent contemporary female artist from India, born in Neoli, a small
sub-urban area in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
