Picasso Sculptures at MOMA had this eclectic insignia about it that invited intrigue and curiosity more than the auction news that was circling the market. Somehow with all the highs of the art world in the art of the gavel, we don’t seem to think of Picasso as a sculptor, but this epic showing at MOMA substantiates that we should. “Picasso Sculpture focuses on the artist’s lifelong work with sculpture, with a particular focus on his use of materials and processes. The exhibition, which features more than 100 sculptures, complemented by selected works on paper and photographs, aims to advance the understanding of what sculpture was for Picasso, and of how he revolutionized its history through a lifelong commitment to constant reinvention. The exhibition is organized in chapters corresponding to the distinct periods during which Picasso devoted himself to sculpture.” Guitars and violins Cubist metal blades, monumental heads and busts of women in the eyes disproportionate plaster: the largest exhibition of Picasso’s sculptures for 50 years in the United States has some 140 works created over a period of 60 years will run until February 7, 2016.
