Evolution of Art in bengal
and Kolkata
Partha Mukherjee
Bengal soaked in different cultures and thereby grew as an important centre for art and culture in the eastern part of the country. While the ‘Caterpillar’ metamorphosed into a ‘Butterfly, it grew as a city of contrast.
Crisscrossed by many rivers, Bengal is a land of soft soil. Obviously, people that live here are soft minded and so are the painters. Pictures drawn by these painters are moist with emotions. Lines they draw are supple and delicate, tones of paint they select are considerably mellow and angles they choose from which they look at any subject are poetic. All these together reveal that each piece of artworks is quintessentially an expression of the Bengali mind.
