An Enigma Of Colour: A Feature On Nupur Kundu

As one stands in front of a canvas many colours, etchings and visual surprises unlayer from one colour to the next, holding one spell bound. The individual style leaves no room for guessing…It is a Nupur Kundu abstract one is staring mesmerised at. A plethora of colours put forward as a visual treat with an underlying complexity that is impossible to ignore, Nupur Kundu’s abstracts speak in a language at times mellifluous, at times extravagant and at times ruminative.

With various awards to her credit, various solo exhibitions and her work in collection in galleries in USA, Singapore, Dubai, Germany Munich, HongKong, Nupur Kundu is a name to be reckoned with in the genre Indian abstract painting.

The artistic journey of Nupur Kundu in fine arts has been a memorable one. The fusion of colours, technique and emotions that Nupur explored as a Kathak exponent led naturally to a brilliant exploration of hues and techniques on canvas.

Born in a traditional family originally from West Pakistan, with a focus on an upbringing that was quintessentially Indian, where a professional/technical degree was the expected career choice, Nupur found a lot of support nonetheless in her creative endeavours from her father, a chemical engineer with a passion for art and painting. He was the beacon that gave her the confidence to tread the uncertain and turbulent path of an artist.

"Nupur Kundu has a gone a long way and she believes that there is a long way to go still. But then that is what artistic fervouris all about. The future is uncharted and untraversed, Nupur may not be clear about the destination but she will certainly continue the journey. The road is before her, firm, colourful and symbolic- as are her canvases…"
