Tallur’s Stones For Summer

Uma Nair

Galleries in Delhi usually partake of a humdrum torrid summer by doing a summer show culled from their archives. When one such showof 5 sculptures circles around an art genius who travels the world, it’s a must see. Skoda winner (2011) Tallur LN’s New Stone Sculptures at Nature Morte, draw you into their maw. Twin grey Nandi Bulls sitting in reverie, a pair of faceless Vishnus with longitudinal apertures that are eerie, two stone images that begin in yogic postures but end with a boulder or a cylindrical stone somewhat destroyed off its periphery.

You wonder if the artist takes a piece of time and freezes it. Tallur is a conceptual artist who uses sculpture, wall pieces, interactive work and site-specific installations to expose the absurdities of everyday life and the anxieties that characterize contemporary society. His work incorporates the organic, handmade craftsmanship, found objects, the industrial, and symbols of India, often times creating a correlation between traditional and contemporary customs.
