The Comic And The Obscene

Clyde D’ Mello

Comics have always been in this flux of being popular, yet for some quaint reason it hasn’t been considered as art or “high art” especially in India. It’s as if even though the artist may get opportunities of display in biennial’s and exhibitions, it is still considered as one of the “things kids read” {though awareness of this medium has been brought out in the forefront, it still remains questionable}. Mind you, a comic artist and writer take a long time to develop a really good story, art, and concept to be brought to the public probably longer, than what we call, “high Popular Neo-liberalist art” that runs in the present galleries. What I am trying to get at here is that, history technically proves it otherwise, and we are so honed on displaying our works on the colonial identity of a single summarized narrative that we forget our own narrative past.
