Priya’s Shakti [New York]

Alison Adams

Apne Aap supported the comic, based on super hero: Priya’s Shakti in its first ever augmented reality Art Exhibition in New York City. The epic comic book, PRIYA’S SHAKTI, presents a new Indian female superhero and rape survivor who tackles the problem of sexual violence in India and around the world. “The Priya’s Shakti exhibition opening at City Lore Gallery in New York on Thursday May 7th simply put- took my breath away. I work at Apne Aap International and we are the non-profit partner of Priya’s Shakti and so I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of the comic book project since its beginning. Since its release at Comic Com in Mumbai in December, the comic book has sparked intrigue and excitement around the globe. I’ve personally, been thrilled to be a part of a project that is so visually entertaining and beautiful but also carries with it a purpose of telling Priya’s story. Priya is not just any comic book character flying around on a tiger because she is actually fighting for a cause and believes she can fight to end genderbased violence through sharing her story. This is why I chose to paint my own art work for the exhibition which shows Priya on a postcard having written: “My name is Priya and I stand against genderbased violence, will you stand with me?” and beneath her is my response saying “My name is Alison, I work at Apne Aap and we will stand with you. Now let’s get others to stand with us.”
